How Do Top Running/Top Riding Cranes Work?
Top running cranes come with either a single girder or double girder bridge design. The single girder is more cost effective, but the double girder can handle longer spans and higher capacities.
These bridge girders have end trucks attached to ends that ride on top of heavy duty ASCE runway rails. A control panel is used to drive the end truck (and bridge) down the runway.
A Trolley containing a hoist is mounted to the bridge which will contain the hook and lifting device. A variety of different hoists are available to accomodate any lifting application. Single girder bridgers typically have an underhung trolley whereas double girder bridges typically have a top running trolley.
Top Running cranes allow for maximum hook height compared to Underhung Cranes.
