What You Need to Know About Vertical Reciprocating Conveyors (VRCs)

What is a vertical reciprocating conveyor?

A vertical reciprocating conveyor is a safe and quick way to transport materials vertically in your facility from one level to another. A VRC is similar to an elevator, but it is strictly for objects only, not people.

How is a vertical reciprocating conveyor designed?

A VRC consists of a platform that is connected to pulleys, counterweights, or hydraulic systems that allow it to move in a vertical pattern. Unlike elevators, which have a cabin, VRCs are able to be more compact, not taking up unnecessary floor space in your warehouse or facility.

Are vertical reciprocating conveyors customizable?

Yes! VRCs are customizable as they can be adjusted to a wide range of heights, speed, and weights. A VRC moves objects of all shapes, sizes, and weights – and will be customized to best move your materials. Depending on your current setup, vertical reciprocating conveyors will be designed and installed in the most efficient manner to best transport the materials that you frequently move around in your facility.

What are the different types of vertical reciprocating conveyors?

There are two main types of VRCs: Hydraulic VRCs and Mechanical VRCs.

Hydraulic VRCs use hydraulic cylinders to move up and down. These are better for shorter distances, and less frequent lifts.

Mechanical VRCs use electric motors and counterweights to move. Unlike the hydraulic VRCs, these designs are better for longer distances and more frequent lifting.

What are the benefits of vertical reciprocating conveyors?

One of the main reasons why people choose to use VRCs is for safety reasons. If your team is having to lug around material up and down stairs to move it from level to level, there is a possibility for accidents. A VRC takes away that heavy lifting, reducing the risk of workplace injuries and keeping your team at ease. A VRC also eliminates the need for a forklift – allowing you to use safer method for moving materials.

This automation solution also comes equipped with sensors to enhance safety. Overload sensors are one example – this prevents a conveyor from overloading beyond its capacity. Ask about our additional safety features that can be added to your VRC!

VRCs also increase efficiency. The process of moving items via a VRC instead of traditional methods shaves time off of your day-to-day workflow, allowing you more time in the day.

We also know that space is hard to come by, which is why a VRC is a great space saving solution that moves materials from level to level. The compact design of VRCs still allows for floor space, and we’re able to integrate a VRC into your current facility, ensuring that it’s placed in the most efficient spot possible.

How does the cost of the VRC compare to that of a freight elevator?

VRCs have a lower initial investment than freight elevators generally. This is due to their simpler design and different regulatory requirements. VRCs also are more energy-efficient than freight elevators, leading to a lower operational cost. Over time, maintenance costs are typically less than freight elevators due to the straightforward design.

How will ISS Material Handling help with the installation of a vertical reciprocating conveyor?

ISS Material Handling has installation crews ready to get your VRC solution up and running. We’ll make sure that your VRC is setting you up for success.

Is a VRC the right fit for my facility?

Our team at ISSMH will conduct an analysis of your facility to find your pain points and understand how your operation runs. From there, we will be able to advise if your facility could benefit from a VRC, and we’ll be able to design a VRC that will integrate well into your operations.
